Drafting a five-item ByteSnack daily issue

A good snack-sized digest depends on selection and structure more than volume. This guide walks through building one sample issue, from choosing items to checking that every entry is short, clear and useful.

Step one: fix the five slots — ByteSnackA useful path from inputto understanding

01

Step one: fix the five slots

Decide the role of each item before collecting anything. A workable set is: one news item, one tool worth trying, one concept explained simply, one number with context, and one small action the reader can take today. Fixed slots make the issue predictable, speed up writing and help readers know where to look. For a sample issue, the news slot might cover a software update, the tool slot a free diagramming app, and the concept slot what an API does in a sentence. Variety then comes from topics, not from format.

Step two: write each item in three beats — ByteSnackByteSnackProductDescriptorContext

02

Step two: write each item in three beats

Give every item the same shape: a headline of about eight words, two sentences of explanation, and a closing line that says why it matters. Take the number slot as a worked example. Headline: Most password resets begin with a forgotten login. Explanation: describe the figure's source in plain terms and what it measures. Closing line: suggest turning on a password manager. Verify every figure against a primary source before publishing, and name that source. Cut jargon, or define it in half a sentence. The whole item should be readable in under a minute.

Step three: review the issue as a reader — ByteSnackByteSnackDomainHandleDocument

03

Step three: review the issue as a reader

Read the finished draft once for time and once for value. Total reading time should stay near five minutes; if it runs longer, trim the weakest item rather than shrinking all of them. Check that links work, claims are attributed and the action item is genuinely doable. Then ask whether a reader could repeat one thing they learned from each entry. Keep a short log of which slots drew replies or clicks, and adjust the next issue accordingly. Consistent tone and a clear sign-off matter more than clever subject lines.
